Maritime Eco-incentives: A Boost for Sustainability
The Maritime Eco-Incentives initiative aims to subsidise the development and use of maritime freight transport, rewarding socio-economic and environmental merit. By encouraging the shift from road to maritime transport, this measure not only improves the environmental performance of transport, but also contributes to the decarbonisation of the economy and helps to address climate change.
The selection process was rigorous and detailed. The 46 selected transport companies underwent a thorough review and evaluation procedure to ensure that they met the requirements set out in the call for applications. While inclusion on the list of those accepted was a significant step, the beneficiary companies must meet the criteria during the application review and evaluation phase in order to receive the aid.
Social and Economic Impact
These subsidies not only benefit transport companies, but also have a positive impact on society and the economy as a whole. By promoting the use of maritime transport, the external costs of transport are reduced, air pollution is reduced and the social and economic impact of transport activity on local communities is mitigated.
The Future of Maritime Eco-Incentives
With a total duration of three years and an initial budget of €60 million, the maritime eco-incentive programme is set to continue its mission of promoting sustainable transport practices. The Ministry of Transport has announced a second call for proposals, suggesting a continued commitment to this initiative and a desire to expand its impact in the future.
The call for proposals, which covers the period from 20 September 2022 to 31 March 2023, has generated great interest across the community of carriers, shippers and transport operators. Below is a list of the 46 beneficiary companies:
