Nitrogen oxides, known as NOx, are a group of harmful gases found in vehicle exhaust. To combat them, a chemical process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is used, which involves injecting ammonia (NH₃) into the exhaust gases to convert the NOx into harmless nitrogen and water. This process is critical to meeting current emissions standards.
How do NOx sensors work?
- Oxygen Detection in Exhaust Gases: The NOx sensor has two measuring chambers. In the first chamber, the level of oxygen present in the exhaust gas is measured. This is done by an electrochemical reaction that removes oxygen from the gas sample, helping to ensure that the NOx measurement in the second chamber is accurate. The amount of electricity needed to remove oxygen is adjusted based on the air-fuel ratio, and this information is sent to the engine control unit.
- NOx measurement: In the second chamber, the nitrogen oxide (NOx) content in the exhaust gas is measured. The remaining NOx is reduced to nitrogen and oxygen via a platinum-rhodium electrode. The resulting oxygen is removed from the measuring chamber by this electrode. The electric current required to carry out this electrochemical reduction is precisely measured and used as an indicator of the NOx concentration in the exhaust gas.
- SCR System Adjustment: Information on the NOx concentration is used to make important decisions in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. Based on this measurement, the amount of AdBlue® solution (urea and water) injected into the exhaust system is adjusted. AdBlue® is essential for reducing NOx to harmless nitrogen and water in the SCR catalyst. In addition, information from the NOx sensor is used to verify that the SCR system is functioning correctly.
