The connected V16 beacon is a luminous pre-signaling device that is placed on the immobilized vehicle —usually on the roof using a magnetic base— and emits a luminous signal visible in 360°.
Its main difference compared to previous models is that:
- Incorporates geolocation.
- It automatically transmits the location to the DGT 3.0 platform.
- It eliminates the need to leave the vehicle to place triangles.
The measure has been promoted by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) with the aim of reducing the risk of pedestrian accidents on interurban roads.
Mandatory features according to regulations
For a beacon to be valid from 2026 onwards, it must meet the following technical and administrative requirements:
- Integrated connectivity to DGT 3.0.
- Data transmission via communications network included.
- Active geolocation system.
- Official homologation in accordance with V16 regulations.
- 360° visible light signal.
- Regulatory flash intensity and frequency.
- Minimum operating duration required by regulations.
- No additional periodic fees are required during the mandatory connectivity period.
Acquiring uncertified devices may result in higher penalties.
Current sanctions regime
The currently applicable sanctions are:
- 80 Euros for not having or not using the regulation beacon (40 euros with prompt payment).
- To 200 Euros if the device is not approved or is used incorrectly.
- No points deduction from the driving license.
Several specialized media outlets have already documented real cases of sanctions imposed in different autonomous communities.
Practical cases and common mistakes
Some of the most common errors detected are:
- Keep only the triangles.
- Purchase unconnected beacons.
- Buy models without valid homologation.
- Confusing the obligation of the beacon with that of the reflective vest, which remains mandatory.
It is important to remember that the beacon replaces the triangles, but does not eliminate the other obligations in case of immobilization.
