The entry into force of the mandatory connection of the V16 beacon on January 1, 2026 has been accompanied by some public confusion about the possible existence of a grace period.
However, the operational reality is clear: The sanctions are being processed and the regulatory requirement is fully in force.

In the first days of January, statements were made from institutional sources referring to a "reasonable" or "flexible" adaptation period. At the same time, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) insisted that there were no official extensions.
The key element is legal: No formal instruction was published suspending the sanctions regimeTherefore, the Security Forces and Corps apply the current regulations from the first day of the year.
Various specialized automotive media outlets and legal portals have confirmed that fines have already been issued for not having the required V16 beacon connected.
Legal framework and sanctions regime
The obligation is based on traffic regulations that establish the use of the regulatory pre-signaling devices when a vehicle is immobilized on the road.
From January 1, 2026:
- The Emergency triangles are no longer valid.
- Only the V16 beacon connected with geolocation.
- The device must be approved and certified.
- You must transmit your position to the DGT 3.0 platform via an integrated communications network.
The sanctions applied so far include:
- 80 euros of fine (40 euros with early payment).
- Without point deduction.
- To 200 Euros in cases of incorrect use or non-approved device.
Legal resources and debate
Some firms specializing in traffic law have announced appeals based on the so-called "principle of legitimate expectation", arguing that certain public statements may have generated expectations in drivers.
