The first piece of advice that the DGT gives us is to carry out a thorough inspection of our vehicle before embarking on any long journey. During the summer months, the heat can particularly affect the battery, accelerating its discharge. In addition, the high temperatures of the asphalt and the rubber of the tyres can cause a loss of pressure, increasing the chances of suffering a puncture while driving.
Another important aspect to consider is luggage. It is common to carry more things than necessary during road trips, but reducing the weight of the vehicle not only contributes to greater fuel savings, but also to safer driving. According to the DGT, for every 100 kilograms of extra weight, fuel consumption increases by 6%. In addition, it is essential to distribute the luggage appropriately, placing the heaviest items in the lower part of the trunk to maintain the vehicle's center of gravity and improve its stability. It is also advisable to store the objects that we need to have at hand in the designated compartments in the vehicle, thus avoiding possible inconveniences while driving.
