The Burgos Transport Center (CT Burgos) has reaffirmed its position as a leading logistics infrastructure in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and as one of the key hubs of the European Atlantic Corridor. At an institutional and business meeting held on June 6, representatives from the public and private sectors highlighted the potential of this platform in the new context of logistics, energy, and digital transformation.
Burgos is projected as a logistics hub with European projection
under the motto “Logistics Potential of Burgos”, the forum allowed to highlight the growth of the center during 2024, with a 6% increase in its activity and an available expansion of 220.000m² intended to house new facilities. CT Burgos moves forward with investments focused on accessibility, technological modernization, energy efficiency and sustainability, consolidating itself as an attractive logistics hub for industrial operators, distributors and long-haul transport companies.
From the Junta de Castilla y León, the Minister of Mobility, José Luis Sanz Merino, highlighted the role of the sector as an economic and territorial engine, pointing out that logistics already represents 3,6% of regional GDP, above the national average. Its vision is to strengthen the community's role in major European multimodal transport hubs.
Infrastructure prepared for new industrial demands
The consulting firm HINTD, specializing in transportation and logistics, presented a roadmap for the center's development, aimed at leveraging its strategic strengths:
- Transport Service for custom made, key for exporting companies.
- Direct connection with the national railway ring, promoting intermodality.
- Growth of 15% in number of companies incorporated in 2024.
Among the recommendations, it was proposed to adapt the logistics floor to activities of High value added such as chemistry, steel, automotive or cold logistics, through the development of mega-plots, specialized cross-docking warehouses and intermodal infrastructureThis strategy would position Burgos as an alternative to hubs like Illescas or Zaragoza.
Social and infrastructure challenges in the value chain
During the parallel workshops, attendees addressed some outstanding challenges in regional logistics:
- Incorporation of more female talent to the sector.
- Improvement of working conditions and auxiliary infrastructure for drivers, as rest areas.
- Optimization of road and rail access to the metropolitan area of Burgos.
- Need to consolidate the forum as an annual meeting point for companies, administrations, and related entities.
The presence of key players such as the Castilian-Leonese Hydrogen Association (H2CYL) also highlighted the opportunity that the energy transition represents to strengthen Burgos' role as a sustainable and competitive logistics hub.
