Diesel remains the preferred choice in the EU new truck market, says ACEA
Despite European policy efforts to boost electric technology in the transport sector, the latest data reveals a surprising reality. According to the European Vehicle Manufacturers Association (ACEA), diesel continues to dominate the market for new trucks in the European Union, leaving electric vehicles lagging behind.
Only 0,6% of trucks sold in the EU are electric vehicles, ACEA report reveals
The ACEA report shows that a staggering 96,6% of all trucks registered in the EU during 2022 were powered by diesel. Alternative fuels such as natural gas, LPG or ethanol accounted for just 2,8% of new registrations. Surprisingly, electric cargo vehicles accounted for just 0,6% of total truck sales.
This means that only one in 166 trucks sold in the European Union is electric, while 160 are diesel. Even the remaining options, mainly gas vehicles, are still equipped with combustion engines. This trend not only confirms the strong presence of diesel on the market, but also ensures a continued supply of conventional vehicles that will continue to feed repair shops as they have done up to now.
The lack of adoption of electric vehicles in the transport sector poses significant challenges for European policies and their aim to promote clean technology. Despite the investments made and the mandates put in place, the results show a considerable gap between the established goals and the current market reality.
The transition to electrification of transport appears to be facing obstacles related to charging infrastructure, the cost of electric vehicles and the lack of adequate incentives for their acquisition. In addition, the reliability and range of electric vehicles compared to their diesel counterparts also raise concerns among fleets.
In the face of these challenges, it is clear that more effective strategies are required to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in the transport sector in the European Union. Policies must address both economic barriers and concerns related to the infrastructure and performance of electric vehicles, in order to achieve a successful transition towards a more sustainable and cleaner transport system.
