The commercial vehicle registration market in Europe is a mixed bag. Vans are driving growth thanks to demand for local deliveries. However, trucks and buses are showing an uneven trend. Spain stands out among the main European markets, with an increase in sales that places it at the head of the European Union.
Spain leads van registrations in Europe
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), van sales in the EU increased by 8,5% in the first nine months of 2024. In this context, Spain leads the growth, with a notable increase of 16,7%, outperforming other large markets such as Germany (+8,2%), Italy (+7,3%) and France (+5,8%).
Evolution of truck registrations in the EU
Truck registrations in Europe fell by 7,5% between January and September. Sales of heavy trucks fell by 9,5%, while those of medium trucks grew by just 3%. Spain and Italy achieved increases of 12% and 2,1% respectively. However, declines in Germany (-7%) and France (-4,3%) contributed to the overall negative result for the sector.
Growth in Bus Sales
Unlike trucks, bus sales in the EU grew by 16% compared to 2023. Spain stands out again, leading the growth with an increase of 21,8%, closely followed by Italy (+21%).
The Importance of Last Mile Demand and Local Deliveries
The rise in van registrations reflects the growth of last-mile logistics in Europe, driven by the expansion of e-commerce and urban deliveries. Spain stands out as a key market, demonstrating that demand for commercial vehicles for delivery continues to boom.
Outlook for the European Commercial Vehicle Sector
The European market situation is mixed. While demand for vans and buses continues to rise, trucks are facing difficulties. Economic recovery and stability in trade are expected to drive higher demand for commercial vehicles, especially in the van and bus segments.
