The Council approves the Euro 7 Regulation
The Council of the European Union has officially adopted the Euro 7 Regulation, which establishes new rules for emission limits for passenger cars, vans and heavy goods vehiclesThis step marks the final phase of the legislative process and marks a milestone in environmental regulation of road transport.
The new framework aims to reduce emissions of air pollutants, improve air quality, and strengthen durability requirements for batteries, brakes, and tires.
What changes with Euro 7?
El Euro 7 Regulation It focuses not only on exhaust gases, but also on indirect emission sources which until now had less regulation. Among the new features are:
For passenger cars and vans
- The current limits are maintained Euro 6 exhaust emissions, but requirements on solid particles are tightened.
- Limits are set on emissions generated by the tire and brake abrasion, even in electric vehicles.
- New standards of battery life to ensure minimum performance throughout the vehicle's life cycle.
For trucks and buses
- Stricter limits on multiple pollutants, including previously unregulated ones such as nitrous oxide (N₂O).
- More stringent service life rules for mileage and operating time.
- Obligation to comply with emission limits for more years of service.
Application calendar
The entry into force of Euro 7 will depend on the type of vehicle:
- Passenger cars and vans: : 30 months for new types and 42 months for all new vehicles.
- Trucks, buses and trailers: 48 months for new types and 60 months for models already in production.
- Systems, components and technical units: 30 months for passenger cars/vans and 48 months for heavy vehicles.
Context and future of the sector
Euro 7 is part of the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (2020) and the “Zero Pollution” Action Plan (2021)The regulations come in parallel with the transition towards Full electrification by 2035, when combustion cars and vans will cease to be sold in Europe.
Meanwhile, Euro 7 will be key to ensuring that combustion vehicles that continue to circulate until that date do so under the most stringent emissions standards.
El Euro 7 Regulation This represents a challenge for manufacturers, distributors, and workshops, who will have to adapt to stricter requirements regarding emissions and component durability. It also represents an opportunity to accelerate the transition to a cleaner and more efficient vehicle fleet in Europe.
