The Ertzaintza has ended the information period that began on January 1st and this week begins to sanction drivers who do not have or do not use the V16 beacon correctly in case of breakdown or accident.
The infraction is classified as minor and carries a fine of 80 Euros, the same amount that was previously applied for not carrying or not using the warning triangles.

The V16 beacon permanently replaces the triangles
The implementation of the V16 flashing light is part of the strategy promoted by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) to reinforce road safety and reduce the risk of collisions during emergency road signaling.
Since January 1, the The V16 beacon is the only authorized hazard pre-signaling system when the vehicle comes to a stop on the road. With this device:
- It is not necessary to leave the vehicle to place triangles.
- The driver's exposure to traffic is minimized.
- Visibility is improved in 360° under adverse conditions.
It's important to remember that not all commercially available beacons meet the technical requirements stipulated by regulations. In fact, the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) itself has withdrawn approvals from certain models due to administrative or technical non-compliance, which reinforces the importance of working exclusively with certified products.
End of the educational phase in the Basque Country
According to the Basque Government's Department of Security, the initial months of implementation focused on informing drivers. Now that this transitional phase is over, violations related to the absence or improper use of the V16 sticker will be subject to penalties.
This scenario confirms a clear reality for the spare parts sector:
The V16 beacon is no longer a recommendation, but an effective obligation with a penalty system.
For spare parts stores and distributors, this represents a sustained business opportunity, especially given the regulatory horizon that will culminate in 2026 with the mandatory use of connected devices.
