New tolls for trucks in Vizcaya: a controversial and costly measure for transporters

Implementation of Tolls in Vizcaya

In response to the state government's decision not to introduce tolls on Spanish motorways and roads, the Provincial Council of Vizcaya has opted for the opposite position, establishing tolls for trucks on the main motorways and national roads in the province. This measure has begun with the installation of numerous control arches on different roads, initially on the BI-625 and the N-240, and since 1 July, extended to the A-8, N-636, BI-10 and BI-30 (formerly N-637) roads.

Free-Flow Toll System

Toll management is carried out using a number plate verification system using free-flow technology installed in the arches. This system calculates the amount based on the Euro category of the vehicle, charging the toll directly to the transport company that owns the truck, without the need to stop.

Economic Impact on Transporters

According to Fenadismer's calculations, the monthly extra cost for self-employed workers and companies that use these routes will be around 600 euros. This measure will have a clear inflationary effect, mainly affecting Biscayan transporters.

Fenadismer Reviews

Phenadismer The Spanish government has strongly criticised the measure, describing it as “a simple tax-raising effort” by the Provincial Council of Vizcaya. They argue that the road transport sector already contributes significantly to the maintenance of roads through taxes. In Vizcaya, almost 500 million litres of diesel A are supplied annually, mainly for transport vehicles, which allows the Provincial Council to collect approximately 150 million euros per year from the hydrocarbon tax alone.
