In recent weeks, there has been a notable increase in interest in the V16 connected beacon, especially with the approach of January 1, 2026, the date on which this device will be mandatory in all vehicles circulating on public roads in Spain (except motorcycles, although their use remains recommended). This surge in inquiries makes it essential to have access to accurate and verified information.
With this objective, the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has published a technical note clarifying how communication between connected V16 beacons works and what the privacy implications are. Key points about the connected V16 beacon and privacy
The connected V16 beacon only transmits data in case of emergency.
When activated, it emits a light signal and communicates exclusively the location of the immobilized vehicle, along with a technical identifier necessary for the operation of the system.
The identifier is not related to the driver or the vehicle registration.
There is no record linking the device to the user's identity. Nor is any information stored that would allow it to be associated with a specific vehicle.
No personal data is required to purchase or use a connected V16 beacon.
The Directorate General of Traffic does not receive, manage or request personal information from the buyer.
Outside of an emergency, the beacon does not transmit any information.
While it remains switched off, the device does not emit any signal. And during use, the data sent does not allow the driver to be identified or previous journeys to be reconstructed.
The transmission ends when the device is deactivated.
No histories are generated or traces are stored after the emergency alert.
The regulations prohibit additional functions or uses unrelated to signage.
A connected V16 beacon can only serve two purposes: to make the stopped vehicle visible and to communicate the location of the incident to the DGT 3.0 platform. Any other function is expressly prohibited.
