Which transport companies must calculate their carbon footprint? New obligations for large operators in the sector

A new decree came into force on June 12th, introducing significant sustainability obligations for large companies, including those in the transport sector. Although it does not affect all operators, it does mark a turning point for many companies, which must now calculate their carbon footprint and design specific emissions reduction plans.

New environmental requirements for large fleets

The new regulatory framework establishes that all companies required to submit non-financial information—that is, those with more than 500 employees or, over two consecutive fiscal years, an average of more than 250 employees, a turnover exceeding €40 million, or assets exceeding €20 million—must calculate their carbon footprint annually.

This calculation is not limited to internal matters; it must be made public, free of charge, and accessible through the corporate website, including both the generated footprint and the strategic plan for reducing it. This data must also be integrated into its sustainability reports.

Binding reduction plans and five-year horizons

Beyond the calculation, the affected companies must design and publish a emissions reduction plan with measurable objectives and a minimum five-year horizon. This plan must include concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and align with the commitments made under the Paris Agreement, including the transition to a low-carbon economy and the goal of climate neutrality by 2050.

Although the decree does not require registration in the national carbon footprint registry—an official database managed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition—it does invite companies to voluntarily join starting in 2026, promoting greater traceability and environmental transparency.

Opportunity to anticipate from the after-sales sector

For workshops, fleet operators, and spare parts distributors involved in industrial transport, this regulatory change represents a strategic opportunity. Large fleets will be required to measure and reduce their emissions, which will likely drive the replacement of components with more efficient ones, greater attention to preventive maintenance, and the adoption of technological solutions that minimize their vehicles' energy consumption and emissions.

Likewise, supplier companies will be able to differentiate themselves by offering products that actively contribute to these sustainability goals: from spare parts that reduce vehicle weight to more efficient electronic management systems or integrated environmental consulting services.
