Road safety depends on correct signage on the roads, and among the most important elements to warn of possible risks is the V2 signal, a luminous device designed to alert drivers of vehicles traveling at low speeds, stopped, or performing tasks on public roads.
What is the V2 signal?
The V2 signal is a luminous element characterized by:
- Flashing rotating lights auto yellow color.
- Be visible in all directions from at least 100 meters.
- Light up both day and night.
- Be approved according to UNECE Regulation No. 65.
It must be installed above the highest turn signal lights on the vehicle, without obstructing the driver's visibility or affecting the strength of the vehicle's structure.
Which vehicles must use the V2 sign?
According to Annex XI of the General Vehicle RegulationsThe following types of vehicles are required to carry this light signal:
- Vehicles in service on public roads:
- Cleaning, maintenance or roadworks vehicles.
- Those who perform activities or operations that require standing or moving slowly.
- Special transport vehicles:
- vehicles with special cargo o oversized.
- Pilot or accompanying vehicles for these transports.
- Vehicles for events or special situations:
- Vehicles accompanying cycling marches, sporting events, military columns or other events on public roads.
- Vehicles transporting dangerous goods:
- Used in exceptional situations requiring greater caution.
Important: The use of the V2 sign does not require administrative authorization, regardless of whether it is an additional element or is integrated into the construction of the vehicle.
Additional features and reflective markings
On a voluntary basis, vehicles using the V2 signal can be equipped retroreflective badges around the vehicle, which must meet the following specifications:
- Retroreflective material in accordance with UNE-EN 12899 regulations (classes 1 or 2).
- Alternating red and white stripes, inclined at 45 degrees.
- Minimum width of the badge: 140 mm.
- Minimum width of stripes: 100 mm.
- Minimum surface:
- Front: 0,16m².
- Rear: 0,32m².
- Side: 0,16m².
In emergency vehicles, the retroreflectors must cover up to one third of the available surface in the front, side and rear areas, and not exceed 55 cm height.
Why is the V2 signal important?
The V2 sign is essential to prevent accidents in areas where there are obstacles or special services on the road. Its use in vehicles operating on the road warns drivers to take extreme precautions, especially due to the low speed of these vehicles or the possible appearance of obstacles.
