DGT Report: No Significant Changes in Fatal Accidents

La Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) The Ministry of Health has reported that in May there were eight deaths in road accidents involving commercial and industrial vehicles, the same number as in May of last year.

Last month, the DGT reported more than 39 million long-distance road trips, an increase of 6,3% compared to May 2023. In total, there were 83 traffic accidents, with a total of 92 fatalities, nine more than in the same period of the previous year.

Official statistics show that eight deaths occurred in accidents involving commercial and industrial vehicles during May, matching the figure for last year. Of these, seven deaths involved vans, four more than in May 2023.

The remaining fatality occurred in an accident with a truck with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of more than 3,5 tonnes, four fewer than in the same month last year. There were no deaths in accidents with trucks of up to 3,5 tonnes, as in May 2023.

General and Regional Trends in Road Accidents

Overall, there has been an increase in collisions and a decrease in road exits. Regionally, the number of accidents has increased in Andalusia, while in Extremadura, Navarra, Ceuta and Melilla there were no fatalities during the month. In the first five months of 2024, a total of 445 people have died in traffic accidents, 26 more than in the same period of the previous year.
