The Iron Knight from Volvo Trucks: A Record-Breaking Truck and a Pioneer in Electromobility

The Volvo Trucks "Iron Knight" has been breaking records since 2016 and remains a technological marvel in the automotive world. Thanks to a collaboration with Goodyear, it was recently showcased at the Circuito de Madrid Jarama – RACE, where it once again demonstrated its impressive performance. In this article, we'll explore the features and achievements of this world-class truck and also discuss Volvo Trucks' vision for electrification and sustainability in the transport industry.

Volvo's Iron Knight

Volvo Trucks and Electromobility: Volvo Trucks is not only known for its powerful truck performance, but also for its commitment to electromobility and sustainability. The brand has developed a complete range of sustainable products, including electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles in addition to its traditional diesel engines.

The Mighty Iron Knight

The heart of the Volvo Iron Knight is its 13-litre, six-cylinder engine, equipped with four turbochargers. Located centrally in the chassis, this engine is capable of generating an impressive 2.400 horsepower and an impressive 6.000 Nm of torque. This allows the truck to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,6 seconds and reach a top speed of 276 km/h – impressive numbers for a 4,5-tonne vehicle.

High Performance Tires

Goodyear has equipped the Iron Knight with 315/70R22.5 tires designed specifically to support its powerful power. These tires are based on those used in the FIA Goodyear European Truck Racing Championship (ETRC), ensuring optimal performance on the track and road. These tires were manufactured using standard Goodyear truck tire casings, with tread compounds and patterns designed especially for the Iron Knight.

Impressive Records

The Iron Knight has proven its worth by breaking two impressive records. In an acceleration test from zero to 1.000 metres, the truck reached an average speed of 169,09 km/h in just 21,29 seconds. It also broke the 500-metre record, reaching a speed of 131,29 km/h in just 13,71 seconds. These achievements astound the industry and demonstrate Volvo Trucks’ technological excellence.

In particular, the new FH I-Save has reduced fuel consumption by 3% – 4% compared to its predecessor, and a new 420 hp engine has been introduced. In addition, Volvo Trucks offers liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines with up to 500 hp and increased range thanks to larger tanks.

Volvo’s line of electric trucks, including models such as the FE, FL, FM, FMX and FH, are designed to meet the demands of a variety of transport applications, and their range varies depending on the load and version.

The Future of Volvo Trucks: Volvo Trucks is fully prepared to meet Euro VII and GSR II regulations. The brand has integrated advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as emergency stop signal and reverse detection, to improve safety on the road.

Volvo Trucks is also at the forefront of fuel cell technology through its collaboration with Daimler Truck in the Cellcentric joint venture. The company is developing fuel cell systems that could revolutionise the industry in the coming years.

The Volvo Trucks "Iron Knight" is a true engineering marvel that continues to break records and demonstrate the brand's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the transport industry. Volvo Trucks remains at the forefront of electromobility and is prepared to meet future regulatory and technological challenges. This truck exemplifies the power and performance the automotive industry can achieve when advanced technology is combined with a forward-thinking vision.
