Volvo has set a milestone in the transport industry by introducing the FH16 780, a 780 hp (3,800 Nm) version that dethrones Scania from its position as the most powerful production truck in Europe.

Although it still carries the FH16 name, this truck is powered by an all-new 17-litre engine. Certified to run on HVO, the D17 features a single turbocharger that Volvo says improves engine response and the driving experience. The manufacturer’s patented wave-shaped piston design optimises combustion and reduces emissions. A new injection system improves fuel economy, and higher maximum cylinder pressure enables the higher power output.

The engine is offered in three power ratings: 600 hp (3,000 Nm), 700 hp (3,400 Nm) and a whopping 780 hp (3,800 Nm). The I-Shift transmission has been enhanced to handle these additional levels of torque.

For our customers, this translates into getting the job done faster with improved fuel efficiency.

Sales of the new engine start in mid-2024, with European production expected in the second half of the year. The only production truck offering more power is the 6000 hp Shacman X800, but this is not on sale in Europe.
